ISSUE 3 Sep 2010

Dear reader

In this issue, we not only look at new project wins but also shift some focus to creativity and teamwork, two of our main core values. Winning the park design competition was no small feat as were our CSR roles in the Youth Olympics and National Day celebration in Abu Dhabi.

JURONG Consultants Awarded Phase 2 of Semakau Landfill Development

JURONG Consultants was recently awarded the Civil and Structural Engineering Consultancy Services for the Phase 2 Development of Semakau Landfill by NEA through an open tender. The services include planning and design, contract administration and construction management.

This project involves the design and construction of bunds for the partitioned cells to hold solid wastes. The greatest challenge for the project team, however, is to ensure that the rich biodiversity in the proximity of the site will not be impacted by the project.

JURONG Consultants successfully secured the project after a pre-qualification stage and amid stiff competition from established consultancy firms.

New Wins in China

JURONG Consultants has once again reaffirmed her capabilities in industrial park planning by securing projects in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces and capped it with a PM project in Guangzhou.

The five-month Fujian project award entailed providing an industry upgrading study and conceptual land use and infrastructure master plan for an 8sqm Qingmeng Industry Park in Quanzhou.

For the Zhejiang-project, we will be providing an industry study, conceptual port planning, structure land use and infrastructure master plan for a port industry park in Zhoushan.

JURONG China will act as the client representative for the Guangzhou project - Meizhou City Industrial Park. The team will manage the development schedule, assist in design coordination and design improvement processes. Winning this project met our target of achieving high-level project management with opportunities for downstream projects.

Great Teamwork In Winning Park Design Competition

Stiff international competition did not deter the JURONG Consultants team of seven architects in coming up with a creative design for the planning of the 49ha Wuxi Bio-Technology Park.

The urban design concept for an innovative R&D zone within Wuxi's New District Plan was awarded the top position last month. Sited on an approximately 49ha land for life sciences and supporting industries, the winning design focused on high connectivity between various clusters, an architecturally-iconic and vibrant centre, and green solutions at many levels for an overall sustainable environment.

Design consulting services for master planning, site planning and a landmark building concept is now in the cards for JURONG Consultants after winning the competition.

JURONG International’s Communications Day

Into its third year now, the annual Communications Day directed its focus on listening skills with the theme, “Get The Point”. While content and body language had been the themes for the past two years, getting tips on effective listening was a welcome change.

Staff participated enthusiastically in the lead-up Crossword Puzzle contest, and gained knowledge on new words and their usage. ‘Get The Language’ contest was a new item, where participants had fun guessing the language of the songs. An external speaker was also invited to share on ‘The Power of Listening’ where participants learned to listen with the ‘heart’ and capture the essence of the conversation.

Training Our Future Leaders

High potential staff were selected across all companies within the Group to participate in the JURONG International Leadership Development Programme, held in Batam Island in September.

Participants were put through intense tests and challenges such as the developing of a hypothetical corporate strategy within an hour. Other activities included The Leadership Simulator; a four-hour trekking activity; Sea Sports Station, which required them to design, build and manage a sea-going contraption, etc., all part of a training itinerary comprising a good mix of both hands-on and think-tank activities.

A Role for SMM in Singapore Youth Olympics Games 2010

JURONG International’s facilities management arm, SMM Pte Ltd, was awarded the contract for the installation of air-conditioning systems in the Youth Olympics Village at NTU last year.

And in the spirit of CSR, SMM supported the YOG event by having an FM team at the Games Village 24/7 to respond promptly to all technical issues. Even when it came to non-technical matters, the team was at hand to lend support.

Thinking of The Less Fortunate

Singapore's National Day was celebrated by some 300 Singaporeans in Abu Dhabi on 6 Aug, an event organised by the National Day Committee and the Singapore embassy to Abu Dhabi. Capping the joyous occasion was a joint CSR effort by JURONG Middle East, SMM and a group of sponsors, who did not forget the less privileged in the community in which they lived and worked.

A cheque for AED45,000 was presented to Kim Childs of Future Centre For Special Needs by the Singapore Ambassador to Abu Dhabi, Mr Tee Tua Ba at the event.
